The Big Lies The West Tells Itself About Israel And Hamas
The notion of occupying the moral middle ground is often seen as a position of neutrality and fairness, especially in complex conflicts. This stance is particularly prevalent in the West's approach to the Israel and its adversaries. The idea is that by staying in the middle, one can avoid taking a strong stance and remain impartial, appreciating the nuances in conflicts like that between Israel and its opponents.
However, this position becomes challenging to maintain when faced with extreme acts of violence, such as those against Israel. The reality of the situation often disrupts this neutral stance. Yet, it's common to revert back to a state of moral equilibrium through the use of certain narratives or beliefs.
These narratives include warnings against potential human rights violations by Israel, the promotion of the Peace Process despite its failures and setbacks, and the separation of anti-Zionism from anti-Semitism. Each of these points serves to maintain a balance in moral judgment, often at the expense of addressing the complexities and realities of the situation. This approach allows various groups, from leftist Jews to the international community, to hold onto a semblance of moral high ground while oversimplifying the conflict's deeper issues.
